Is time a limitation?
- What comes to mind when you think of TIME?
When I think about time I think of a resource that we should organise best in order to be able to achieve goals, academical and professional, but also fulfill our passions and take care of our loved ones. It’s the room where we place our experiences, which generate our memories, becoming part of our identity. Time is not only an objective element, made up of seconds, minutes, hours and so on, but there’s also a subjective component, that has to do on how we perceive its flow, and that depends on our emotions, on the value we associate to certain situations and how we face them. For instance an hour can feel like a second when we’re having fun, while it can seem like eternity when we’re doing a task we find tedious.
2.Tell us what you would like to explore more that relates to TIME
I’m really fascinated by this subjective aspect of time, dealing with how we perceive it, based on our own inner feelings. The interplay between the objective and subjective component of time is very interesting and I’d love to explore this topic more, even because I believe that it has an impact on our mindset, behaviour and actions.
3.How does TIME affect you or those around you, is it a positive or negative thing?
I believe that most people, myself included, often feel stressed by how little time we have, we always want to have more because it goes by so fast. We feel overwhelmed since we have so many things to do, but so little time to do them, which causes negative thoughts, concerning our self-esteem and, consequently, our whole well being. I think that having a more relaxed view of time might lead to a different approach to life, which isn’t so full of unnecessary worries, therefore being more enjoyable.
4.Why does TIME matter to you?
On the one hand I feel pressured by time being limited, like it is not enough to pay attention to all of my interests in the way that I’d like to, which causes me to feel some kind of fear that I can’t do be everything that I want to be. On the other hand i realise that I’m still very young and I don’t have to do everything now, i still have a lifetime to develop new interests, skills and i can be many different things. Therefore time is a very important topic to me and I think it’s precious.
5.What do you hope to gain from participating in this Residency programme?
I hope that this residency programme will stimulate me to exchange opinions and ideas with other people, allowing me to have a broader vision of time, analysing it from different points of view. Hopefully this also leads to a deeper exploration of myself and to a development of my confidence with processing and sharing my ideas.
6.What do you feel you could gain from the mentorship aspect of this programme and the connection to artists, scientists, researchers and industry makers?
I’m also looking forward to working with experts from different backgrounds, as this could help to gain interdisciplinary skills and learn how to put art and science together to have a more elastic mind and be able to think more out of the box. In my opinion developing different kinds of skills is essential to have a deeper understanding of the world and the ways we could improve it.
7.What do you wish your peers cared about more and how does this issue connect to the theme of TIME?
I wish my peers paid more attention to empathy. Especially during the last couple of years it has been difficult to connect with other people due to the COVID pandemic, which also forbid us to even leave our houses for a while. This situatition is likely to have worsened many people’s mental health, so now more than ever it’s essential that we’re ready to listen to people in an empathetic way and support each other. That’s because the more someone is left alone with no one checking in on them, the worse the situation gets, possibly becoming unbearable and unfortunately we realise that too late sometimes. Therefore I think that time is crucial in this context, so we should all make the effort not to be selfish, ignoring what others are going through, but try to be there for each other instead.
8.Tell us about something that you saw or read about recently (any topic), share why you found it interesting and how you believe it impacts young people.
Lately I’ve been reading a lot about failure, which is often depicted as a completely negative thing in our society, while it is actually natural and just a part of self exploration and the process towards success. I think that the negativity around this topic causes a lot of stress and anxiety, especially among young people, who may still be trying to fully understand themselves and what they want in life, or they have dreams that they haven’t been able to achieve yet. They may constantly compare themselves to other people who have already made it and therefore believe that they’re not good enough. I’m convinced that this can be very damaging, because everyone has its own journey and needs their own time to do different things, so no one should feel like a failure and think they’re a step behind from everybody else: they’re just different people, with different lives, which are difficult, if not impossible to compare to one another, since everyone is facing different issues and going through different situations.
9.Describe an experience you are proud of where you were part of a team (e.g. studies, work, relationships)
A couple of years ago I took part in a sort of summer camp, where I was responsible of helping to organise activities, looking after the kids and so on. It has been more challenging than I had expected because not only we had to make sure the children were having fun, but we were also expected to be a role model to them and help them grow. Seeing the excitement on the kids faces and having them come to us for support has been very rewarding, so I’m quite sure that our hard work has paid off.
10.If Science and Art was an animal what would it look like and what would it do?
If Science and Art was an animal I believe it would act spontaneously, since both art and science include spontaneous processes, that can create something stunning and breathtaking. That’s why I think that this animal would be able to amaze with its gorgeous colours and its elegance. At first glance it may come across as a boring and useless creature, but it would reveal itself to actually be essential, as it would carry out actions that the rest of the environment necessarily relies on.
